Driver of Overturned Mini-Van Suffers Injuries, Crash Caused by Medical Condition

The driver of an overturned mini-van that forced the shutdown of Valley Forge Road on Wednesday afternoon was unconscious at the time of the crash.

The incident occurred at 12:46 p.m. near the intersection between Valley Forge and Artmar roads, when a mini-van driven by 38-year-old Josh Bafia, of Towamencin, struck a utility pole and overturned onto the roadway. Bafia became entrapped in the vehicle following the crash, and required extrication from the Worcester Volunteer Fire Department.

According to his family, Bafia is in end-stage kidney failure and is receiving dialysis three times a week while awaiting a donor for a kidney transplant. At the time of the crash, Bafia—who also has type-one diabetes—was unconscious due to low blood sugar, and as a result of the crash, Bafia suffered a fractured arm, bruising to his collar bone and minor head trauma.

He was released from the hospital late Wednesday night, according to his family.

No other vehicles were involved, and no one else was harmed. The roadway was closed for almost two hours due to the crash, with units from Worcester, Lower Providence and Norriton Fire companies assisting at the scene.

The crash caused extensive damage to the mini-van, resulting in the family’s only vehicle being totaled. That’s unwanted news for the family of six, as they continue to struggle financially in the wake of Bafia’s diagnosis and treatment schedule.

“Unfortunately, [the accident] cost them the loss of their only vehicle,” said Jodie Miller, a close friend of the family, who helped organize an ongoing GoFundMe campaign several months ago. “With the possibility of Josh being out of work now, since he doesn't have transportation to and from anymore, this family needs all the financial help they can get.”
