Franconia Township Police Release Details of Tuesday’s Suicide incident in Souderton

Franconia Township Police have released some of the details regarding yesterday’s search and suicide incident in Souderton Borough.

According to the release, Franconia Township Police received a request to check on the well-being of a 49-year-old Souderton man at 12:48 p.m. The caller told police that they believed the man was despondent and possibly suicidal, and was last seen along the 100-block of Cherry Lane in Franconia Township. Reports at the time indicated that the man was possibly armed, according to sources.

Police located the man’s vehicle in a wooded area near Cherry Lane and Souderton-Hatfield Pike, and a search was initiated with help from a canine unit from the Montgomery Township Police Department and resources from the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, according to the release.

Following a report of shots fired at 2:37 p.m., the man was found deceased in a nearby wooded area from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No one else was harmed during the incident, the report states.

Franconia Township Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Souderton, Telford, Lower Salford, Hatfield, Lansdale, Montgomery Township and Towamencin police departments, as well as members of the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, Souderton Community Ambulance, Perseverance Fire Company and North Penn Goodwill.

The name of the victim has not been released.
