Scallop Thief Arrested at Wegmans, Charged with Felony Retail Theft: Police

Monique Abele, 38, of Croydon.

Montgomery Township Police have announced the arrest of a 38-year-old woman who allegedly stole scallops from Wegmans last month.

According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to the 800 block of Bethlehem Pike at 1:23 p.m. on June 16 for a report of a theft 10 minutes prior. Police spoke Wegmans security personnel, who stated that they viewed their surveillance footage and observed a white female—identified as Monique Abele, 38, of Croydon—enter the store, select $91.26 worth of scallops, and then exit the store without paying, the report states.

Charges against Abele were filed two weeks later, including felony counts of retail theft and receiving stolen property. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.

According to police, the felony charges were levied due to the incident being a third or subsequent retail theft offense.
