‘Knight For A Cause’ To Benefit Local Cancer Patient

A local organization is bringing the community together to help a local woman in her battle with cancer.

Knights for Life is hosting its annual Knight for a Cause event on Friday, Feb. 1. It will take place at PineCrest Country Club from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. There will be raffles, a photo booth, dancing, and food. Beer and wine are included, but cocktails are cash. The Philly Phanatic will be making his first appearance at the event this year.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online through Eventbrite or at the door. Single tickets are $60 and couples tickets are $110 through Friday, Jan. 25. After that, only single tickets will be available for sale.

This year’s Knights for a Cause recipient is Joan Greer, who is the wife of Mike Greer, a Lansdale Catholic graduate and member of the local band, Mike Greer and Co. She is battling stage four cancer. Mike has always headlined the event, so the organization decided to choose Joan to be this year’s recipient of the money that is raised.

“It’s a great opportunity if you ever wanted to be part of the community,” said Laura Smith, the vice president of Knights for Life. “If you ever wanted to be involved in something that is very community-minded, this is it. We all have connections through North Penn and we’ve all become friends.”

Knights for Life was started in 2012 by North Penn graduate Steve Melchoir, who lost his best friend and his brother within months of each other—both from cancer. He formed the organization to bring the community together to help other families who were hit hard by tragedies like what he experienced.

The organization helps those within the North Penn community, but it is not limited to helping North Penn students and graduates. They also support Lansdale Catholic graduates as well as those who may have moved to the area but did not attend North Penn.

“We work together to try to reach into as many corners of our community as we can to draw people in,” said Smith.

Recipients of the funds are chosen from a pool of nominations that are submitted to the organization’s website. The nominations are sorted through by the organization in early fall and a recipient is chosen by looking to see who is in need and who still needs help by the time of the event.

For those who want to contribute to the cause, the organization is looking for raffle donations or event sponsors. If you are interested, you can reach out to the organization through their Facebook page.
