A North Penn High School graduate’s song was chosen to be the anthem for the 2019 Women’s March.
“Halfway There,” performed by 2011 North Penn graduate Liz Mencel, under the stage name Rozes, will be heard this Saturday through the streets of several cities where the Women’s March is being held.
According to Mencel’s bio on Rozes’ website, the song was originally written for her sister-in-law after she received a cancer diagnosis.
In an interview with Bustle, Mencel adds that the song was written around the time of Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, so there were a lot of raw emotions for women who have faced sexual assault. She wanted to inspire these women to keep fighting.
The video, filmed in Philadelphia on Dec. 16, shows 50 women, including Mencel’s family and other North Penn alumni, coming together to support each other. The video was directed by Danny Gevirtz, who graduated from North Penn in 2012.
Mencel hopes her song, and the Women’s March, shows people that women are, and always have been, strong and capable of accomplishing whatever they set their minds to. She told Bustle that she will be participating in the Women’s March for the first time this year, either in Philadelphia or New York.
