Mayoral Musings: ‘Stories are a Communal Currency of Humanity’

As this is both the inaugural “Mayoral Musings” and the launch of North Penn Now, it is important to highlight the pivotal role local news and reporting plays in our community.

News reporting and gathering is not an easy job. It takes time, patience and whole lot of grit. However, it is particularly time consuming on a local level. Municipal meetings often take place at night and can cover topics that range from parks, to trash and taxes. Meanwhile, local reporters must be versed in many of these topics without losing sight of the wider picture: the community, the people in it and how it will affect all of us

Good reporting is not about saying what happened. It is telling the story of our community and painting a picture of the events that take place here and how that series of events, in turn, shape our home and all of us. It is an incredibly hard and arduous job, to be certain, and I am hopeful that North Penn Now will live up to the task.

It is exciting to be a part of that story, and even lend my voice to it when I can. Lansdale has a rich history full of vibrant and interesting characters that shape our community every day. My hope is to use this space to tell some version of the events that take place in our borough, share my thoughts on our progress forward and how we might get there together. It is my belief that by sharing our stories we can come to understand one another better and, hopefully, effectively articulate why Lansdale is the best place to live, work, and play.

After all, as Margaret Atwood said, “You’re never going to kill storytelling because it is built into the human plane. We come with it.” Since that is the case, we might as well lean into it and tell the best story we can about the community we love.
