Harriet Carter Announces Closure, Layoffs

Harriet Carter has announced that they will close their facilities in Montgomeryville and Chalfont at the end of March, laying off a total of 202 employees in the process.

The announcement was made to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor via the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), which required that employers provide notice 60 days in advance of a covered business closing and covered business mass layoff.

The company has been in business since 1958, according to Philly Business Journal, and initially produced decorative wood switch-plate covers. In the years since, Harriet Carter has branched out to sell many other items, including “As Seen on TV” products such as Magic Ear, HD Vision Glasses and PawPerfect.

Property records indicate that Harriet Carter Gifts owns the 170,000-square-foot facility at 425 Stump Road in Montgomeryville, as well as a 130,000-square-foot facility at 90 Hamilton Street in Chalfont. Both of those facilities will shut down as part of the closure.

The WARN filing states that operations will cease on March 29. Attempts to reach Harriet Carter officials via phone and email have been unsuccessful.
