Mayoral Musings: Post Office Follow Up

After several weeks of working with the CIC (Consumer & Industry Contact), Congressman Fitzpatrick and I have made some forward progress on addressing the concerns of our community. In the months after the article ran here on North Penn Now, I received several (15 or more) detailed complaints about some of the challenges residents have faced over the last few years with their mail delivery. Most, if not all, outlined four key problems occurring across the borough:

  1. Perpetual late delivery (after 6:00 p.m.)
  2. Regular non-delivery or missing mail
  3. Consistent wrong-home delivery
  4. Poor issue resolution from management when concerns are brought forward

These concerns were detailed and shared with the CIC, who has now made and communicated a clear plan on how to address the issue going forward. In order to ensure better delivery across the North Penn area, the CIC will be speaking directly with management about the issues and direct complaints I have shared with them. Management will then be expected to investigate and report back on the four items above and how they plan on solving them locally.

Additionally, the CIC will be speaking directly with the Letter Carriers Union to coordinate improvements in the Lansdale office at the letter carrier level. The reality is that mail is sorted by machines, however, every carrier should be checking to make sure addresses and names are correct before delivery. This additional check should help solve delivery to wrong addresses. If more training is required, the CIC and the union will be working in coordination to ensure carriers have the proper training to deliver mail accurately and in a timely manner.

Finally, the CIC will be reviewing progress over the next few months. This is a critical step. If we want to see full improvement in our mail delivery in-and-around the borough, all of us must continue to alert staff to any issues that might arise. Now is not the time to be shy with your complaints. If one of the four issues above, or any other for that matter, continues or persist, please reach out to the post office and record your complaint. In addition, please share the concern with my office as well, so that I have a record of it.

I intend to hold the CIC’s feet to the fire on this issue as best I can. If service has not improved significantly in the next few months, I will be sitting down with Congressman Fitzpatrick’s office again and review what our next steps might be. The reality is that we cannot continue to have a central federal service, like mail delivery, taint our area’s good name, and together we should be able to find a positive resolution to the problem.
