Montgomery Elementary School raised more than $20,000 in its Sixth Annual Mini-THON event this past weekend.
The event was held on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Montgomery Township Community and Recreation Center. It raised a total of $21,356.04 for the Four Diamonds Fund, an organization that helps pay for treatments children battling pediatric cancer that is not covered by insurance. The organization also funds cancer research.
While the main event took place on Saturday, the school held fundraising efforts beginning in September. At the Mini-THON, students in kindergarten through third grade participated in activities from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and fourth, fifth and sixth graders participated from 3 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Students were expected to stand for the duration of their event.
Activities at the event included a DJ for dancing, “minute to win it” games, obstacle courses, Zumba instruction, blanket making and an assortment of games. Merrill Reese, play-by-play radio announcer for the Philadelphia Eagles on SportsRadio 94.1 WIP-FM, made a surprise appearance for participants at 3:30 p.m.
The event is based on Penn State’s THON event, which also raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund. While several Pennsylvania high schools hold similar events, Montgomery Elementary is one of only a handful of elementary schools that host this kind of event.
