"If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."
That is a quote by Doc Brown, as portrayed by actor Christopher Lloyd, from the blockbuster hit film "Back to the Future". Although this is a fictional character, this type of focus translates to community relations in towns like Lansdale.
As an entrainment industry professional, I heavily prescribe to this ethos when creating and curating concerts, events, and happenings at The Underground by Round Guys Brewing Company. I've found that the most important part of the local arts and entertainment industry is accomplishing a trustworthy foundation. Residents, surrounding businesses, ticket buyers, bands and entertainment acts need to trust that a venue will bring 110 percent not only to customer service, but to the overall experience. Trust is not immediately given, community trust is built and earned over time. This building process includes speaking with residents and surrounding businesses, getting their input, getting their customers input and working to create a positive experience for the town, rather than to satisfy personal feelings.
At this point, let's reflect on the initial quote at the beginning of this article and replace a few words.
"If we put our mind to it, we can accomplish anything."
This accurately reflects the approach needed when generating new business within a town like Lansdale. We all need to work together. We need to play to our crowd, not our personal wants and needs. We need to generate trust, not only with our customers, but within ourselves and our individual organizations.
Recently, I attended an event with guest host Jack Maxwell of The Travel Channels "Booze Traveler". A main speaking point of his was experience creation. When filming his show, he makes sure he takes the time to speak directly to the town’s people in each country he visits. He cherishes the human interaction and experiences he shares which each individual. As a town, we can learn a lot from this advice. We should talk to each other, figure out what we want as a community, decide our direction, and formulate reasons for people to visit our awesome area.
All in all, positive community relations within ourselves, residents and our customers are key to business success, and the success of our area. Listen to each other, plan our future, and trust each other. Together, we can accomplish anything.
