Upper Dublin Man Charged with Murder After Beating Father to Death: DA

Maximillian Han, 27, of the 1800 block of Hood Lane.

An Upper Dublin man is facing murder charges after he allegedly beat and stabbed his father to death following a visit from their pastor on Dec. 23.

Maximillian Han, 27, of the 1800 block of Hood Lane, has been charged with first degree murder, third degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime, tampering with evidence and theft by unlawful taking, in connection with the investigation.

According to the criminal complaint, Upper Dublin Township Police were dispatched to the 1800 block of Hood Lane—in the Ambler section of Upper Dublin Township—on Dec. 23 at 1:58 p.m. for a report of an unconscious male that was bleeding from his head. Upon arrival, police located 58-year-old Jinhan Han lying on the living room floor, bleeding from injuries to his face and head. Emergency medical personnel from Ambler Ambulance attempted to resuscitate Han, but the efforts were unsuccessful and Han was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police noted there were signs of a struggle inside the home and blood was found at different locations within the living room, according to the complaint. A joint homicide investigation was then launched between the Upper Dublin Township Police Department and the Montgomery County Detectives, and the home was secured as a crime scene.

Investigators first spoke with the victim’s wife, who stated that she had arrived to the locked home to prepare food when she found her husband bleeding from the head. She said she then immediately called 9-1-1, according to the complaint. Police also spoke with the family’s pastor, who said that he held an in-home worship service with Jinhan and Maximillian from 9:20 a.m. to 10 a.m., and noted that he did not see anyone else inside the home, according to the complaint.

Meanwhile, investigators at the crime scene determined that the victim’s injuries were consistent with a physical beating, and noted that blood-stained towels and plastic containers had been recovered that were used to clean the area around the victim’s body, the report states. Police also allegedly recovered a box-cutter-style knife near the victim’s body, as well as a butcher-style knife with a broken blade tip in the kitchen, according to the report.

The victim’s wallet and cash were also present in the home, the report states.

Detectives then interviewed one of the victim’s two sons, Maximillian Han, who allegedly had bruising, swelling and abrasions to his right hand, the report states. Han initially told detectives that he left the home after getting “pissed off” at his father, then locked the door and went to the Willow Grove Park Mall and LA Fitness, according to the report.

Han later allegedly told investigators that he had lied in his initial statement to investigators, and then allegedly confessed to killing his father, according to the report.

Han allegedly told investigators that he used punches, strikes and the grip-portion of a knife to smash his father’s skull, and stated that he felt like an “MMA fighter” while doing so, according to the complaint. Han then stated that he removed his father’s cell phone and sold it at a kiosk at the mall, which police confirmed and recovered the following day.

On Dec. 24, an autopsy was performed on the victim, and the cause of death was deemed multiple blunt and sharp injuries. The manner of death was listed as homicide.

Maximillian Han was arraigned at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 by Magisterial District judge Karen Eisner Zucker, who denied bail. Han’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Eisner Zucker on Jan. 2, 2020, at 10 a.m.
