Man Facing A Dozen Felony Charges After Forging Checks from Montgomery Township Business: Police

A Delaware County man is facing a dozen felony charges after he allegedly forged and cashed two checks belonging to a business in Montgomery Township.

According to the criminal complaint, Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to Foster Keencut, located along the 200 block of Progress Drive, on July 17 at 3:18 p.m. for a report of checks being stolen from their mailbox, altered and then later cashed. Police spoke with the accounting manager, who stated that two stolen checks had been cashed in Philadelphia, and both of them had been altered to be made out to 31-year-old Matthew Roughton, of Chester, PA, the report states.

The combined total of the checks was $6,942.24, according to the complaint.

Police then obtained certified copies of both forged checks, and secured surveillance footage that allegedly showed Roughton cashing each of the two checks, the report states.

On Oct. 31, police filed charges against Roughton, including four felony counts of forgery, two felony counts of access device fraud, two felony counts of identity theft, two felony counts of theft by deception and two felony counts of receiving stolen property.

Roughton was taken into custody on Dec. 10 and later arraigned on the charges by Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy, who set bail at $25,000 unsecured. Roughton was then released from custody, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Jan. 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. in front of Judge Duffy.
