Over one thousand North Penn students will participate in the Mock Democratic Convention on Jan. 3, 2020, at North Penn High School (1340 Valley Forge Road, Lansdale, PA).
The first mock convention was held in 1976 by North Penn teacher H. James Finnemeyer, who created it as an opportunity to spark students’ interest in politics through immersion in a real-world scenario. Classes have been divided into delegations representing U.S. states and territories, with the ultimate goal of nominating a candidate to run for President of the United States. Delegations will debate student-selected political issues, develop a party platform, and select a candidate to nominate.
Myriad local and national political figures have been invited to speak at the convention, in addition to several student speakers.
Mirroring the extensive media presence at national political events, North Penn Television will provide live gavel-to-gavel coverage of the mock convention. North Penn Television students will be directing, reporting, producing packages, and conducting live interviews, as well as serving as political analysts throughout the live coverage.
Coverage begins at 7:45 a.m. and concludes at 2:30 p.m. North Penn Television can be seen on Comcast Cable Channel 28 and Verizon FIOS Channel 29 in the North Penn community.
