Driver Rescued After Crashing into Graveyard on Allentown Road

Local first responders were dispatched to the scene of an overturned vehicle in Upper Gwynedd Township on Monday night, after an 18-year-old male crashed his vehicle into the graveyard on Allentown Road.

According to Sgt. Stephen Gillen with the Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department, the incident occurred at 9:12 p.m. along Allentown Road near the intersection with Old Allentown Road. Gillen said the initial indication is that the vehicle was travelling southbound at an unsafe speed given the road conditions, when it failed to negotiate a right curve and overturned into the cemetery.

As a result of the crash, the driver was temporarily trapped inside the vehicle, but crews from the Upper Gwynedd Fire Department and North Penn Volunteer Fire Company worked quickly to remove the front windshield and free the driver from the wreckage. Despite the visuals of the crash, the driver reported no injuries after being examined by emergency medical personnel on the scene, according to Gillen.

The northbound shoulder of Allentown Road was closed off for about 90 minutes, as police and fire personnel worked to clear the scene. Gillen said the extent of the damage to the graveyard is currently unknown due to darkness, but at least one headstone was knocked over and there was a fair amount of turf damage.

“This young man was quite lucky, but it could easily have gone differently,” said Gillen, adding a general request for drivers to slow down and drive with due regard for road conditions.

In addition to the police and fire units, members of the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale assisted at the scene. Police said they have not yet determined if any charges will be filed as a result of the crash.
