A Chalfont man who was accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old child at the Hilltown Walmart has died in jail.
According to the Hilltown Township Police Department, 69-year-old Gregory Alan Gottlob died from a medical condition while in custody at the Bucks County Correctional Facility last month. Police did not have his cause of death immediately available, but said it was medical in nature and not a suicide.
No foul play is suspected, according to police.
Gottlob was arrested in June and charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child and indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age. Those charges stemmed from an incident that occurred in March at the Hilltown Walmart.
Police were dispatched to Walmart—located along the 500 block of Bethlehem Pike—on March 27 for a report of a sexual assault. Upon arrival, police were advised that a stranger had touched a 5-year-old child inappropriately, the release states.
After nearly three months of investigating, Hilltown Police released surveillance footage of an elderly man and woman whom they believed may unknowingly possess valuable information regarding the investigation. Once they were identified, police were able to make contact and secure the information that ultimately lead to the arrest of Gottlob.
Gottlob was then remanded to the Bucks County Correctional Facility after failing to post 10-percent of $500,000 cash bail. As a result of his death, the charges have been dismissed.
