Lansdale Uber Driver Found Guilty of Raping Passenger, Faces Deportation

Following a week-long trial at the Chester County Courthouse, an Uber driver from Lansdale has been found guilty of raping an unconscious female passenger.

Ahmed Elgaafary, 27, has been found guilty of raping an unconscious victim, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with an unconscious person, sexual assault, indecent assault without consent and indecent assault of an unconscious person.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred at 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 10, 2018. While driving for Uber, Elgaafary picked up a female victim at Valley Forge Casino, and had sex with her after she became unconscious in the back seat on the ride home. The victim woke up only wearing a bra, with bruises on her legs and forehead, and dirt under her fingernails.

When the victim checked her Uber app, she noticed that what should have been a 15 minute ride to her home from the casino actually lasted almost an hour, according to reports.

When interviewed by police, Elgaafary stated that he picked up the victim as a passenger, but denied having any sexual contact with her. DNA testing of a sample provided by Elgaafary would later match the sperm found in the victim’s sexual assault evidence collection kit, according to reports.

Elgaafary was arrested on Oct. 31, 2018, eight months after the incident occurred. Following the charges being filed, Uber issued a statement saying that their thoughts were with the victim and her family, and that Elgaafary had been permanently removed from the app, according to 6ABC.

“Ahmed Elgaafary, an Uber driver, was convicted today after a week-long trial of raping an unconscious woman, who he was supposed to be driving home as part of his job,” said Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan. “Great work by prosecutors Vince Cocco and Alexis Shaw, and excellent investigation by Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Amos Glick.”

Elgaafary, an Egyptian national, will be sentenced at a later date and then deported back to Egypt, according to Hogan. Court records indicate that Elgaafary’s bail was revoked following the guilty verdict, and he has since been placed into custody at the Chester County Prison
