A tractor trailer fire on Bethlehem Pike near the intersection with Church Road forced the shutdown of the southbound lanes of Route 309 on Friday morning.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at 7:39 a.m. for a report of a tractor trailer fire. Witnesses told North Penn Now that smoke from the fire was visible as far as Sterling Drive.
Though no injuries were reported, a fuel spill occurred as a result of the incident. Sources told North Penn Now that there was fuel contamination in the sewer and the Department of Environmental Protection was notified, but we have been unable to confirm.
Then, shortly before 9:30 a.m., the Hilltown Township Police Department put out an alert stating that southbound Route 309 had been closed from Route 113 in Souderton to Bergey Road in Hatfield Township.
The road remains closed at this time, and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area. The truck has since been towed from the scene.
