A Hatfield man has been charged with three felonies as a result of an investigation by the Insurance Fraud Section of the Office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Jiban Das, 40, of the 400-block of West Vine Street, has been charged with workers’ compensation insurance fraud, workers’ comp fraud – receives benefits, and theft by deception in connection with the investigation.
According to the criminal complaint, Das was an employee of Colmar-based Dorman Products when he filed a workers’ comp claim for a lower-back injury on Sept. 14, 2016, that extended payments through Nov. 30, 2017. During that time, the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Insurance Company (PMA) hired a private investigation company that allegedly videotaped Das working at the Kulpsville Gulf Station—located along the 1700-block of Sumneytown Pike—in June and July of 2017, the report states.
On March 28. 2019, investigators spoke with the manager of the Kulpsville Gulf Station, who stated that Das had been a part-time employee from June 2017 through October 2017, the report states. The manager told investigators that Das worked roughly 20 hours per week over that period, and he was unaware that Das had been injured and was receiving workers’ compensation benefits.
Later that day, investigators interviewed Das at his residence, where he provided a recorded statement admitting to working at the Gulf Station while he was receiving weekly benefits for his workers’ comp claim, according to the complaint.
Das was arraigned on April 18, 2019 by Magisterial District judge Ed Levine, who released Das on his own recognizance. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 22 at 9:30 a.m. in front of Judge Levine.
