Costume Contest, Scavenger Hunt, Beer Garden Highlight May First Friday Festivities

With the First Friday season almost upon us, Discover Lansdale has announced the details and features of their first offering for 2019, dubbed the ‘First Friday Comic Zone.’

As you can imagine, the event is comic book-themed, with a drive to get as many people out in costume as possible. Other on-theme activities include a costume contest with categories for dogs, kids and adults, a zip-line for the superheroes and villains, a photo scavenger hunt, themed vendors and a comic-inspired band called the Stereotytans.

For those who prefer to be more Clark Kent than Superman, there will be plenty of non-themed offerings as well, including the return of the pop-up beer garden, food trucks and multiple DJ’s.

Check out the categories below for more information on each location and activity.

ENTERTAINMENT

May First Friday will feature music at three locations: Sterotytans on the stage at South Wood Street, DJ Chris Evans at Railroad Plaza and DJ Tone Arm at the beer garden. Music and performances will begin at each location at 6:30 p.m. and end around 9:30 p.m.

Additionally, a magician will be performing at Railroad Plaza periodically throughout the evening.

BEER GARDEN

The First Friday Pop-Up Beer Garden has bolstered its offerings for its second season, with an emphasis on more choice and more fun. The lineup for May includes beverages from Round Guys, Well Crafted, McAllister, Free Will, Boardroom Spirits and Cardinal Hollow Winery.

Additionally, there will be new tables and chairs, new lighting, corn-hole games, Giant Jenga and 1-2 food trucks. (Guests must be 21+ to drink, with identification.)

KID’S ZONE

The Kid’s Zone will be located at Railroad Plaza for the duration of the season, though offerings and activities will vary from month to month.

For May, the Kid’s Zone will feature two bounce houses, a zip line, a magician, and the return of fan-favorite balloon artist Scott Myers.

COSTUME CONTEST

The costume contest will be held on the stage at Railroad Plaza beginning at 8 p.m. There will be three categories: best dressed dog, best dressed kid, best dressed adult. Voting is based on audience applause, as judged by a group of Discover Lansdale volunteers. That means that those who enter should bring their cheering section with them.

Prizes will be awarded to one winner in each category. (Prize packages will be announced on the event page on Facebook next week.)

PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT

A photo scavenger hunt has been added as a recurring activity for each First Friday in the 2019 season, with a winner being drawn at the end of each event.

Seven photos will be added to the Facebook event page in the days leading up to the event. To participate, you must be able to identify all seven locations, write them down (along with your name and contact info), and submit it at the Discover Lansdale booth at Railroad Plaza by 9 p.m.

A winner will then be drawn at random, who will receive a prize package worth upwards of $150.

FOOD TRUCKS AND VENDORS

Organizers expect to have 3-4 food trucks throughout the event space, with another handful of food vendors on location.

Food trucks will include Lansdale’s own Waffle Mama’s, as well as the award-winning Dump and Roll. Trucks and vendors will be located at Railroad Plaza, South Wood Street and the beer garden on Susquehanna Ave.

TIMING, WEATHER, CONTACT INFO

This season, First Fridays will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. Road closures will include South Wood Street from Main to Courtland, Madison Street from Main to the end of the one-way, and Susquehanna Ave. from Main to Courtland.

Should there be a threat of inclement weather, a decision will be announced by 1 p.m. regarding whether or not the event will be held. There is no rain date for First Fridays.
