Portions of Bethlehem Pike were closed for an extended period early Monday morning, after a suspected DUI driver crashed into a telephone pole and knocked it into the roadway.
Members of the Montgomery Township Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Bethlehem Pike and North Wales Road shortly after 1 a.m. for a report of a single vehicle accident. According to Lieutenant Gerald Dougherty, the investigation into the crash revealed that the vehicle struck and knocked down the pole, and police suspect the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
The driver sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Criminal charges are pending the results of the lab tests, Dougherty said.
Due to the extent of the damage, portions of Bethlehem Pike were closed between North Wales Road and Upper State Road for a total of seven hours. Bethlehem Pike reopened shortly after 8 a.m., according to Dougherty.
Montgomery Township Police were assisted at the scene by multiple area fire companies and fire police, as well as elements from the Lansdale Volunteer Medical Services Corps and technicians from Verizon and Peco.
The age and identity of the driver is being withheld pending any criminal charges.
