Discover Lansdale had to abruptly cancel their planned September First Friday festivities, as what was supposed to be a passing shower turned out to be a drenching storm that caused flooding throughout the borough.
Planners went back and forth during the late morning and early afternoon, regarding whether or not to cancel the event due to the threat of inclement weather. Ultimately, the decision was made to move ahead with the event, as radar showed only a chance of a small shower prior to the event.
Unfortunately, that small shower turned into a drenching storm just before 5 p.m., catching First Friday vendors and members of the Lansdale Public Works Department mid-setup. As the rains began to strengthen and the water began to pool, the decision was made to cancel the event. There is no rain date or rescheduling for First Friday events.
In the aftermath of the storm, widespread flooding was
reported throughout the borough. Would-be First Friday guests responded to the
cancellation with photos of flooded streets, including the intersection of
Chestnut Street and Jenkins Avenue and a completely flooded West Second Street.
Additionally, police were dispatched to the intersection of West Main Street
and Cannon Avenue for an incident involving flooding, and the newly opened Well
Crafted Beer Company reportedly had some issues with water entering their
location.
