Frachthouse Zer0.5K Adds Humor to Oktoberfest Celebration

If you’ve ever considered running a 5K but found the lack of beer, food and costumes to be a deterrent, you may be in luck, as Discover Lansdale has announced the Inaugural Frachthaus Zer0.5K which will coincide with this year’s Oktoberfest celebration.

The tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek event will be held on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m., and seeks to raise funds for the restoration of the Lansdale Freight House.

“The Frachthaus—German for Freight House—Zer0.5K is just a fun and different run or walk event, with the finish line [being] at Oktoberfest,” said Bill Henning, Lansdale Borough Councilman and the organizer of the event. “Currently all the proceeds go to the restoration of the freight house. Once that project is completed we think it would be nice to share the proceeds to other non-profits or organizations.”

The event, which encourages runners to arrive in costume, will begin at 3 p.m. in front of Round Guys, where registered runners will be given a beer (or soda) prior to the start. Participants will then engage what is essentially a death march, sprinting through the rolling hills and challenging terrain of the Wood-Vine connector, ultimately ending up at the Oktoberfest celebration at the Freight House.

Those who can prove they are fit of mind and body by finishing grueling the .5K will be rewarded with a second beer upon completion, a t-shirt and a participation medal—because you earned it. Additionally, there will be prizes for best dressed individuals and groups.

The cost of registration is $25 per adult, and $20 for anyone below the age of 12 (you can register by clicking here). For those who would like to ride in style—or simply find walking .5 kilometers to be a nuisance—guests can reserve a seat on the event’s motorized picnic table for $100 per person.

“The V.I.P. table will have 'special' snack platters like a shrimp tray, crackers and cheeses,” said Henning. “You still get your before-and-after beverage and t-shirt, but you get a bigger medal to wear at Oktoberfest to show that you are more important.”

As for Oktoberfest—which is a free event at the Freight House that will run parallel to the race—festivities will begin at 2 p.m. and end at 7 p.m., and will include beer from Round Guys and Well Crafted, food from Smoke Daddy’s, Cannoneers and Diz’s Dogs, and entertainment and activities including music, pumpkin decorating, apple bobbing, yard games and more.

“Bring your F-U-N attitude, “ said Henning. “That’s what this is all about.”
