Snow Camel's Caretaker Issues Statement Following Thursday Incident

The now-infamous snow camel “Einstein” has returned to his home at the Peaceable Kingdom Petting Zoo safe and sound, and now one of his caretakers has issued a statement aiming to clear up the details of the incident.

In a post on Facebook, Megan Hudock said Einstein is back to giving kisses, though he’s sad that the storm caused him to miss the event at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Hudock went on to squash some of the rumors.

“[Einstein] was not stuck or camel towing our trailer,” said Hudock, punctuated by a laughing emoji. “We just needed his weight out of the trailer to make it up the hill, and he was very compliant and considerate to help out and walk for a few minutes.”

The incident both exacerbated and served as a sideshow for gridlock on Bethlehem Pike on Thursday afternoon, garnering national media attention due to the appearance of a camel walking up a snow covered road in an over-performing snowstorm.

It also served as a moment of levity during a day that was bookended by horrible traffic throughout the region, along with countless EMS, fire and traffic incidents that emergency responders had to contend with. According to the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, emergency responders have had their hands full all day, with as many as 145 simultaneous incidents across the county at any given time.

(Editor's note: our coverage of the incident referred to the van that was towing the camel as a camel tow. There was, however, an unfounded rumor circling on social media claiming that the camel was being used to tow the vehicle up the hill, which is what Hudock was debunking.)
