Malagari Defeats Szekely in Race for 53rd District

For the first time since the launch of the Commodore 64 Computer and Gaming system in 1982, a Democratic representative will hold a seat in Pennsylvania’s 53rd Legislative District.

Following a 36 year Republican run, Lansdale Borough Councilman Steve Malagari defeated former Lansdale Borough Mayor Andy Szekely on Tuesday night, in a highly contested race to fill the seat vacated by former Pennsylvania State Representative Bob Godshall.

“This is a victory for all of us in Pennsylvania,” said Malagari, surrounded by family, friends and campaign workers. “This is a victory for the 53rd Legislative District. This is a victory for us to move forward as a state, and hopefully it helps us move forward as a country, as well.”

Malagari, who stated that his campaign engaged in more than 25,000 voter contact attempts—including knocking on several thousand doors—said he believed voters within the district were looking for change, while also praising the work that had been done by his 36-year predecessor.

“We needed a new direction and new leadership,” said Malagari. “Rep. Godshall represented us well, and he always put the district first. That’s the one thing I want to focus on: putting the district first.”

That sentiment was shared by Sarah Jeffers, who worked on Malagari’s campaign.

“His entire campaign was focused on how best to serve the people of the district,” said Jeffers. “I know [Steve] is a genuine guy that believes in improving the community, listening to his people, and making our area a better place to live—for us, and for Pennsylvania.”

Malagari said the focus of his campaign relied on improving healthcare, funding for schools, infrastructure and economic development. He also attributed a portion of his success to the efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and U.S. Senator Bob Casey campaigning on his behalf.

Attempts to seek contact from Szekely by phone following the election were unsuccessful. North Penn Now did leave a voicemail seeking comment, and we will update this story if/when we receive comment.

For Malagari’s wife, Rachel, the victory comes as no surprise, though she’s excited about the prospect of her husband’s newfound ability to further impact his community.

“[The 53rd District] is an incredible place to live, and I see it getting better,” said Rachel, moments after learning of her husband’s victory. “[Steve] can make this community better, and I’m so happy that he’s now going to have an opportunity to do it.”

That’s a sentiment that Malagari echoed, stating that he’s ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work at the state level.

“I’m looking forward to serving in Harrisburg,” said Malagari. “I’m looking forward to serving the people well. That’s what this is all about.”
