Toy Package Left at Hatfield Wawa Causes Bomb Scare

A suspicious package, wrapped like a Christmas present, that shut down a Wawa convenience store Thursday night turned out probably to be just that—a wayward holiday gift.

The county bomb squad and several first responder teams, including Hatfield Police, Montgomery Township Fire Police and Lansdale's Volunteer Medical Service Corps, were called shortly before 9 p.m. for a report of a package left to the side of the Wawa at Bethlehem Pike (Route 309) and Walnut Street in Hatfield Township. As a precaution, the store was closed as the investigation proceeded.

Hatfield Township Police Chief William Tierney told North Penn Now Friday morning that the package was X-rayed and taken out of commission. It turned out to be a toy, albeit abandoned in a suspicious location.

It's "another reminder that leaving things in odd places can certainly cause public alarm," said Tierney. "People need to be aware at all times."
