Driver Receives Prison in Fatal DUI that Killed Lansdale Man

A Richland Township man will head to prison for his role in a fatal DUI crash that resulted in the death of an 85-year-old Lansdale man.

According to a report by Carl Hessler Jr. with the Pottstown Mercury, David Edward Campbell, 51, of Richland Township, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County court on Thursday to charges of homicide by vehicle, as well as aggravated assault by vehicle and driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. He was sentenced to 20 to 60 months in prison, followed by two years of probation, according to Hessler’s report.

The crash, which occurred in Montgomery Township at the intersection of Shady Lane and Richardson Road on May 23, 2017, claimed the life Robert Sykes Sr., who served as an Episcopalian minister for 25 years and was a frequent volunteer in the community, according to the report. Judge Todd D. Eisenberg described Sykes Sr. as an “extraordinary man” at the sentencing hearing, according to the report.

Toxicology reports revealed that Campbell had a BAC of .261 at the time of the crash, and was also under the influence of cocaine, valium and other substances, according to reports. Campbell was also speeding at the time of the crash, the report states.
